PURPOSE
AND SCOPE (from Article I)
1.
Under the direction of the Council on Engineering of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Center for Research
and Technology Development (CRTD), hereinafter called the Center,
shall direct and monitor the research activities of the Society.
Consistent with ASME's Bylaws, the Center's mission is to effectively
plan and manage the collaborative research activities of ASME to
meet the needs of the mechanical engineering profession as defined
by the ASME members, and to provide ASME members with a vehicle
to
·
identify present, new or unfilled research and technological needs;
·
conduct sponsored reviews of relevant programs for government agencies
and industrial organizations;
·
identify emerging and future technical areas including evolving
multidisciplinary areas, where ASME should be a major player;
·
develop sponsored research projects with governmental and industrial
support for relevant research activities;
·
develop handbooks and databases that effectively organize and present
existing knowledge;
·
collaborate with the Board on Government Relations on public policy
statements related to research and associated areas that are relevant
to mechanical engineering;
·
perform assessments of technological change that might affect mechanical
engineering;
·
jointly with the Council on Codes and Standards define research
needed to develop new codes and standards;
·
effectively communicate results of ASME's research activities.
